Leadership is what we all look for in our elected officials, which makes it the perfect theme for this month’s newsletter.
You’ll find some politics here, along with solid pieces on the nature of leadership.
Let’s start with the politics. Above you saw a terrific video produced by our digital team, showing Ceisler staffers’ plans for voting and being involved on Election Day. I’m delighted many of our people will be working as poll volunteers on Nov. 3.
We’ve also got my latest thoughts on the state of the presidential race and Pennsylvania politics, including the impact of one of our Senate seats opening up in 2022.

Larry Ceisler was interviewed for a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review story on the impact of Sen. Pat Toomey’s decision not to run for re-election in 2022. . In the article, he offers a list of potential Republican candidates who may seek to replace Toomey. Larry also commented in a Washington Examiner piece on the challenges vote counters will face next month, and how many are seeking to lower expectations on how quickly results will be known.

Entercom
Entercom launched its “Vote: Make It Count” campaign, using its national platform to engage listeners on how to participate in the election. In partnership with the nonpartisan organization VOTE411, the campaign is designed to ensure all voters know their options and are able to vote according to their state’s specific requirements.
Residents in three Philadelphia neighborhoods are raising awareness of climate change – specifically urban heat – through public art projects, with the support of The Trust For Public Land’s #HeatResponsePHL program.
Elected officials and community leaders joined the Philadelphia Housing Authority to break ground on Sharswood Ridge, a $52 million mixed-use development. The community-informed and community-supported project, financed through an unprecedented public-private partnership with Mosaic Development and Shift Capital, will add a grocery store, urgent care center, bank branch, restaurants and affordable housing to the Ridge Avenue commercial corridor.
Fitler Club
Fitler Club is hosting “Build Philadelphia Back Better,” exploring how the city can create a more equitable future while emerging from its health and economic crisis. The discussion includes urban thinkers Bruce Katz (Drexel), John Fry (Drexel), Michael Forman (FS Investments/Fitler Club), Harold Epps (Bellevue Strategies), Ryan Boyer (Laborers’ District Council of Metropolitan Philadelphia and Vicinity) and moderator Larry Platt (The Philadelphia Citizen). Inspired by a bold manifesto in The Philadelphia Citizen, the event is on Mon., Oct. 18 at 5:30. Live-event tickets are sold out, but virtual registration remains open.

PA Black Votes Matter
The newly formed regional coalition PA Black Votes Matter is working to battle disinformation campaigns aimed at suppressing turnout on Nov 3. Dozens of organizations are coordinating in a first-ever regional effort to drive a record turnout among Black voters throughout Western PA.
Make Something Workshops
Our client, Make Something Workshops, collaborated with renowned artist and Philly native Steve “ESPO” Powers to bring an incredible mural to Harrisburg, conduct a socially-distanced poster design class and distribute an ESPO-designed yard sign encouraging Pennsylvanians to turn in their mail ballots early. Vistra
Dynegy, a division of our client Vistra, made a $50,000 contribution to the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh to support organizations working for social justice and equity.
VoteSafe
With rising concerns about the Nov. 3 election, VoteSafe Pennsylvania is working to encourage voters to feel confident about mailing in their ballots. VoteSafe is a coalition of community leaders, advocates, nonprofit organizations, corporations, chambers of commerce, party leaders and elected officials. Co-Chairman Patrick Murphy (a former congressman and undersecretary of the Army) appeared on KYW-TV, to explain why he’s optimistic mail-in ballots will be secure.
Pa Family Support Alliance
In Harrisburg, Pa Family Support Alliance hosted its “Front Porch Project,” empowering residents with tools and resources to prevent child abuse. Watch the WHP-TV coverage here. Additionally, CEO Angela Liddle hosted Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Teresa Miller for a virtual conversation on how the public and private sectors are partnering to battle child abuse.
Wesley Family Services
Wesley Family Services completed construction on Pioneer Apartments in New Kensington, which will provide affordable housing for local residents. The development will also house offices 100 behavioral health and therapeutic support staffers, providing who will provide on-site care and services to residents, and individuals and families from the local community.
Chester Housing Authority
The Chester Housing Authority hosted a socially-distanced community event that encouraged neighbors to register to vote and complete their U.S. Census forms. By the end of the evening, more than two dozen residents, mostly young people, registered to vote.
